General Health
Our doctors feel that the best medicine is preventative medicine. This begins with the necessary puppy/kitten exams and vaccinations. In order to maintain a long, healthy life with your pet it is crucial to continue with annual examinations and booster vaccinations. Pets over eight years of age should have biannual wellness examinations along with annual laboratory screening tests for a comprehensive health check up. In order to protect our clients and staff from the risk of zoonotic exposure to rabies it is our hospital policy to keep all our patients current on their rabies vaccinations.
We feel good nutrition is of the utmost importance for maintaining a healthy pet. For your convenience, our practice carries a selection of professional pet foods and nutritional supplements. We will be happy to consult with you on your pet’s individual care. We are here to guide you in the right direction of care that will lead to longer, happier lives for your pets!
Veterinary medicine has made great strides in recent years and pets are now enjoying much longer, trouble-free lives than ever before. We would like to become your partner in providing the finest of health care for your pet!
Surgery
All pets presented for elective surgery must have food withheld for 12 hours and water for at least 2 hours prior to hospitalization. All our animal friends scheduled for a surgical procedure will have a thorough physical examination by one of our doctors. In order for us to help protect your pet against illness, proof of current vaccinations prior to hospitalization for surgery will be required. If you are unable to provide proof or your pet’s vaccinations are not up to date we will be happy to administer them on the scheduled surgery date.
All pets being discharged after a surgical procedure should be restricted in their activities and should not be allowed off leash while outdoors for 10-14 days or until sutures are removed. During this crucial healing period, keep the incision as clean and dry as possible (avoid bathing and/or swimming during this time). Do not allow your pet to scratch or lick its incision. If you notice any swelling, reddening of skin, or discharge from the incision please telephone for advice. (If you have ANY questions we are available at 231-943-8500)
Hospitalization
Hospitalization may be a new experience for both you and your animal friend. After a short period of adjustment your pet will adapt to the clinic environment, care, and feedings. We have several diets available to offer your pet. If your pet has special dietary needs that the doctor may not be aware of please let us know. No visitations are allowed in the hospital ward unless authorized by the doctor. As part of your pet’s recovery therapy, scheduled visitation can be arranged. Please understand that frequent or unscheduled visits can disrupt our working environment and may upset your pet and other patients in the hospital ward.
No other clinic in town has a doctor with a residence onsite. Our unique facility allows for close monitoring of your pet’s condition both day and night.
To help ensure that your pet’s treatments are completed please schedule a pick up time on the day of discharge. Please remember to administer all medications as directed by your pet’s doctor.
Refilling Prescriptions
If your animal friend is on a chronic medication(s) or prescription diet that requires regular refills we ask that you call our office 24 hours prior to your planned pick up. Prescriptions have to be approved by the doctor. A brief telephone call to request a refill can save both you and our staff valuable time. If you are considering using an on-line pharmacy, please check with us first as our prices are usually quite competitive. We strongly recommend that phoned in prescription refills be paid for at that time to facilitate a quicker pick up process when you arrive.
Boarding
We do not participate in routine boarding of animals at our facility. Animals under our care are either undergoing a surgical procedure or have an illness of a serious nature. For this reason we feel that it is in the best interest of your pet to consider boarding at a kennel or private home. Our receptionist will be glad to suggest several reliable facilities in the Traverse City area. You may also visit our home page “Pet Resources” on our website then drop down to “Helpful Links” for local boarding facilities.
Euthanasia
Our job is healing! The euthanasia of healthy animals is not a policy of this hospital. If there is more pain than pleasure in your pet’s daily routine or if it is terminally ill or injured you may choose to consider euthanasia. Cremation services are available.
Payments and Fees
Payment is expected at the time services are rendered. We make every effort to provide fair and reasonable fees for our services. You are encouraged to discuss all charges with the doctor before services are rendered. We have no desire to extend anyone beyond their means or intentions. For your convenience we accept VISA, Master Card, Scratchpay, Check/Cash, and Debit.
